Documents

  • School certificate

    The school-leaving certificate, sent with the school report.

  • Academic transcript

    A copy of your high-school transcript, usually submitted by the counsellor with the School Report.

  • Certified translation

    Certified English translations of the attestat and the transcript.

  • Motivation letter

    The Common App personal essay. Colleges can make it optional or required, and most add their own supplemental essays.

  • Letter of recommendation

    A counsellor recommendation plus one or two teacher recommendations is the usual set.

  • English certificate

    The TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTE report.

  • Passport

    Valid for at least six months beyond the intended period of stay for most applicants.

  • Photograph

    A photograph meeting the State Department specification, uploaded with the DS-160.

  • Financial statement

    Evidence that you can pay tuition and living costs for the first year. The figure is the university’s cost of attendance, so read it off your own I-20 rather than from a general table.

  • CVOptional

    The Common App activities section replaces a CV for most colleges; some ask for a resume as well.

  • Any one of these is enough

    TOEFL iBT 80

    Typical undergraduate requirement. Selective universities ask for 90–100; community colleges accept less.

  • IELTS 6.5

    Typical undergraduate equivalent of TOEFL iBT 80.

  • Duolingo English Test 110

    Widely accepted since 2020, but not everywhere — confirm on the admissions page.

  • PTE Academic 53

    Typical undergraduate equivalent. Check the admissions page.

  • SAT 1,200 (optional)Optional

    Every college has different testing requirements and many are test-optional; 1200 is an indicative score for a competitive application, not a stated minimum.

Minimum grades and years of school

  • 11 years of school

    US admission is based on the secondary-school record as a whole rather than a fixed number of years; an Uzbek attestat is normally accepted. A few universities ask for an additional year or a credential evaluation.

  • 4 on the Uzbek 5-point scale

    An indicative attestat average for a competitive application. US universities convert to a 4.0 GPA themselves and read the transcript, not only the average.

Other requirements

  • Form I-20 issued by the university after it has seen your financial documents

    The F-1 visa is applied for against the I-20; the university issues it only once admission and funding are settled.

  • I-901 SEVIS fee paid before the visa interview

    The SEVIS fee is separate from the visa fee; check the current amount on the official site before paying. Citation repointed: the page this was read from now returns 404 and the link goes to the section root of the same official site. The rule has not been re-read since the page moved.

  • Sign the Form I-20 together with the school's designated school official (DSO); a parent signs if you are under 18

    Study in the States (DHS): you and your DSO must both sign the Form I-20; bring the original to the visa interview and the signed form when you enter the country.

  • Enter the United States no earlier than 30 days before the program start date on your Form I-20

    Study in the States (DHS): you have 30 days to enter the country before your program start date; carry your passport, your visa and the Form I-20.

  • Contact your designated school official (DSO) when you enter the United States and report to the school no later than the program start date on your Form I-20

    Study in the States (DHS): contact your DSO immediately when you enter the United States, and again when you arrive at school, no later than the program start date listed on your Form I-20.
