General rules of the region · Latin America and the Caribbean

We have no separate rules for Uruguay, so below are the general rules for Latin America and the Caribbean. Check the exact list with the university and the embassy.

Latin America and the Caribbean, bachelor’s

These are the general admission rules of Latin America and the Caribbean, shown for Uruguay because its own rules have not been checked one by one yet: the school-leaving attestat with its transcript, certified translations, legalised documents, a recognition check of the qualification and proof of the language the programme is taught in. Every figure — scores, money, deadlines — belongs to the university in Uruguay and to its embassy, not to the region, so treat this as the shape of the answer and confirm each line with them. Teaching is in the official language of Uruguay — Spanish, Portuguese, French or English across the region — so the course page says which language you have to prove.

With an Uzbek attestat (11 years)

One year at a university in Uzbekistan

An Uzbek attestat is issued after eleven years of school. None of the regional and international pages this template rests on states how many years of schooling Uruguay asks for, so this row cannot promise you an answer: universities in the region commonly ask an applicant with a shorter school record to add a year — a completed year at a university in Uzbekistan, a foundation or preparatory year, or an extra examination — while others take the attestat as it is. Ask the university you have chosen and the embassy of Uruguay before you plan that year.

Legalising your documents
Uruguay is a Contracting Party to the 1961 Apostille Convention, so an apostille from the Uzbek authorities on the attestat, the diploma and the transcript replaces consular legalisation. The apostille goes on the original document, before it is translated. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

Documents

  • School certificate

The school-leaving attestat together with its transcript, in the original and in a certified translation. The ENIC-NARIC network names the 2019 Buenos Aires Convention on the recognition of studies, diplomas and degrees in higher education as the convention covering recognition in this region; that page links the text of the convention and sets out no document list of its own, so the list you are asked for comes from the university. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • Academic transcript

The full transcript of subjects, hours and grades, because that is what an assessment of the qualification is made on. The ENIC-NARIC page on the UNESCO Global Convention says the convention establishes universal principles for fair, transparent and non-discriminatory recognition of higher education qualifications and of qualifications giving access to higher education; it lists no documents, so the list belongs to the university. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • Certified translation

A certified translation of every document into the language the university works in, or into English. Which translators and which form of certification count is decided nationally — by the university in Uruguay and by whoever recognises foreign qualifications there; the region's ENIC-NARIC page names the recognition convention, not a list of translators. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • Apostille

Other requirements

  • Recognition of the foreign qualification by the national information centre

Before or during the application the qualification is usually checked by whoever recognises foreign qualifications in Uruguay — a ministry, a national centre or the university itself. The region's ENIC-NARIC page names the recognition convention and the regional networks, but the procedure is national, so ask the university which body issues the statement of comparability and how long it takes. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • Proof of the language the programme is taught in

Every programme states the language it is taught in and the proof of that language it accepts. Where the proof is stated as a CEFR level, the European Commission's Europass page describes what the six levels A1 to C2 mean; it names no level for university entry, and no single level holds across the region, so the level is the programme's own. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • Any one of these is enough

IELTS Academic, for a programme taught in EnglishOptional

A programme taught in English asks for an English test. IELTS say on their own page to choose IELTS Academic if you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. The minimum band belongs to the programme: no score holds for a whole region, so this row carries none. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.

  • TOEFL iBT, accepted in place of IELTS by most universitiesOptional

ETS describes TOEFL iBT as accepted worldwide and as measuring the four academic English skills. Whether the university in Uruguay takes it in place of IELTS, and at what score, is the programme's own rule, so this row carries no score. This is a general rule of the region; the university and the embassy of Uruguay set the exact list.
