The government scholarship for Japan's KOSEN colleges of technology. After a preparatory year the student transfers into the third year of the college and takes a hands-on engineering course. The 2027 guidelines give four years including that preparatory year, four and a half for maritime engineering, and require the applicant to be born on or after 2 April 2002.

The guidelines state an allowance of 117,000 yen a month, a waiver of the entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees, and an economy-class air ticket to Japan and back. Students placed in designated regions get a supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen a month.

Cycle 2027

The application goes through a Japanese diplomatic mission and each mission announces its own document deadline. Study starts in April 2027.

Documents

  • FY2027 Application Form, with a photograph
  • Academic transcripts for all school years
  • Certificate of graduation, or of prospective graduation
  • Recommendation letter from a class teacher or the principal
  • Medical certificate on the FY2027 form
  • Japanese or English language certificate, if you have one (if it applies)
  • Japanese or English translation of documents in other languages
