What documents and grades do you need to study in the Netherlands?

A Dutch application usually starts in the national Studielink portal and continues in the institution’s own system. The Nuffic comparison shows how your diploma measures against Dutch VWO or HAVO; an 11-year attestat normally comes out below. English-taught programmes require IELTS, TOEFL or a Cambridge certificate. Fields such as medicine and psychology run a numerus fixus selection for a capped number of places.

Foundation year

When your diploma falls short of Dutch VWO or HAVO level, Dutch institutions offer a one-year foundation programme: English, mathematics and subject preparation. The Nuffic comparison shows which Dutch level your diploma matches. The foundation year leads into the bachelor, and the application runs through Studielink.

This is the route itself: one foundation year, then the bachelor programme.

A Dutch master takes a completed bachelor degree directly, and the university checks its content course by course. An English certificate is required, usually IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each band. The documents are the diploma, transcript, a motivation letter, a CV and often two references. The application runs through Studielink and the institution’s own system.
